How to read the label

This site discloses the role of generative AI in an article or other published work. The label describes the work as a whole, not merely whether an AI tool was available at some point in the process.

The four labels

• Human-created — Generative AI was not used to create or revise the substantive content.
• AI-assisted — A human remained the primary creator and retained substantive control. AI helped with work such as drafting support, proofreading, editing, translation, or image work.
• AI-generated, human-reviewed — AI created substantive content and a human performed substantive editorial review and retained final editorial responsibility.
• AI-generated — AI created substantive content without substantive human editorial review. This is exceptional.

Images and other media

Images, audio, and video can have their own disclosure in a visible caption. For example, a human-led and fully reviewed article with an AI-generated image is labelled AI-assisted, while the image itself is labelled AI-generated image.

The stored provenance record is the source of truth. Site builds render and validate that record; they do not infer or change a classification.
